Wow, what a wonderful evening it was on Saturday 24th May!
The Said the Maiden girls triumphed at the last gig of their tour, loving being on home ground again, having supported the legendary Dave Swarbrick (of Fairport Convention fame) all over England and Wales for the last two months.
Their set was the usual fare of beautiful vocals and instruments that we can always rely on them for, as well as some fun little surprises: a cover of Fairport's Crazy Man Michael, a new version of Shady Grove (with a different selection of stanzas from the 300+ available!), and the gift of their song A Sailor's Promise, written by Jess herself. Fans will be very excited to know that the song will be on the debut album, A Curious Tale, which is coming out soon!
Said the Maiden's encore song, The Fine Young Smith, had everyone in stitches with its naughty lyrics and innuendos! They then returned to the stage later, during Dave's set, to sing a simply stunning version of Fairport's The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood. I almost cried. Honest. I, and many other fans, hope they record and release it with Dave!
And, to my utter delight, I also discovered a new artist: Kelly Oliver. She lulled me with her gorgeous voice and mesmerised me with her powerful songs. Grandpa Was a Stoker completely wowed me and Molly Malone gently pulled me out of my seat and transported me to Ireland of yore. Needless to say, I will be following her work avidly! In the foyer during the break and at the end of the show, the Said the Maiden girls greeted their fans and took pre-orders for their album. (You will also be able to purchase it from their website, http://www.saidthemaiden.co.uk/)
There was quite a rush and a not-so-orderly queue due to the mass of enthusiasm from fans old and new!
Also at the merch desk was Kelly Oliver selling her debut EP, Far From Home, and Folkstock T-shirts and Dave Swarbrick CDs available to buy. I grabbed Kelly Oliver's EP and Folkstock Art Foundation's Passing the Baton CD, which featured her, Said the Maiden and John Farndon. I also purchased a Debra butterfly.
I was so happy to see the merchandise stand looking so lovely, with a poster, badges and postcards set up in and around a suitcase by the girls (see left, with Jess enjoying her prosecco in a polystyrene cup, and below). My proud parents picked up some postcards and badges for themselves and to send to family in Belgium! :-D Yay!

I really could go on, but I will be back with more news soon. Until the next time!
